Root canal treatment

Decay in the tooth if left untreated gradually progresses and reaches the pulp of the tooth. This thin soft tissue which is also called as the pulp of the tooth consists of blood vessels and nerves. The infected pulp tissue thus causes severe pain in the tooth. Root canal treatment means removal of the infected soft tissues within the tooth and filling it with an inert filling material. The procedure thus saves the tooth and eliminates dental pain. Root Canal procedure if performed well does not cause any pain and can be completed in one or multiple sittings depending on the amount of infection.

The most common symptoms of infected tooth which require root canal are :

  • Severe tooth pain typically increases with the intake of hot liquids.
  • Constant tooth pain
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swelling around the tooth
  • Pain stays for a long time after consuming cold things.
  • Tooth sensitivity on consuming sweets

Post root canal treatment the tooth is then prepared for a crown so as to bear the masticatory forces while chewing. Thus the tooth is brought back to occlusion post placement of the crown.
